Meloni Orban summit Condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine

(Finance) – The “main European and international issues” and “the excellent bilateral relations between Rome and Budapest”. These – Palazzo Chigi said in a note – were the themes at the center of the almost one-hour meeting held today in Budapest between the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni and the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán. Commenting on the results of the Budapest Demographic Forum Meloni and Orbán – we read in the note – reiterated the importance of the value of the family also in consideration of the demographic challenge that Europe must face.

As regards theUkraine, the two prime ministers condemned Russian aggression and hoped for a just peace. They recalled the support provided to Kiev so far and underlined the importance of maintaining the strong unity of EU Member States in broad and multidimensional support for Ukraine.

On the front of migration issues, – highlights Palazzo Chigi – the two prime ministers reiterated the need to act quickly and with determination. “Migration – we read in the note – is a common challenge for the European Union which requires a collective response”. Meloni and Orbán reiterated the need to focus on the external dimension to prevent departures, above all through decisive political and economic support to the countries of origin and transit of migrants, a greater commitment to fighting networks of human traffickers and effective repatriation policy for those who have no right to remain in Europe. “Conditionality mechanisms should also be implemented – states Palazzo Chigi – to guarantee the cooperation of the countries of origin”.

Finally, the two leaders committed themselves to close collaboration between their respective Governments in view of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2024.
