Meloni announces Fitto as new European Commissioner

(Finance) – In the first Council of Ministers after the summer break, the Prime Minister Georgia Meloni announced the appointment of the Minister for European Affairs, Raffaele Fitto, as European Commissioner. “I will communicate to the President today von der Leyen the name of Raffaele Fitto as European Commissioner and I ask everyone to applaud and wish Raffaele good luck, who will have an extremely complex and at the same time exciting task ahead of him. It is a painful choice for me, I think also for him, and for the government, but it is a necessary choice”, declared the Prime Minister.

Meloni underlined the importance of this decision for the future of Italy, defining it as “delicate and very important” for the country in the coming years. He has Fitto’s experience praisedwho “was able to govern the delegations entrusted to him with excellent results”. The prime minister also explained that she shared the decision with the other leaders of the majority and that she received a letter from the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asking for the designation of an Italian candidate.

“We continue to work on the role that we ask to be assigned to Italy. I have no reason to believe that role will not be recognized.. Not out of sympathy or antipathy towards our government, but because we are Italy, a founding nation, the second largest manufacturer and third largest economy in Europe”, added Meloni.

Before the Council of Ministers, Meloni briefed opposition leaders of the choice to indicate Raffaele Fitto as European Commissioner.
