Melinda Jacobs and Martin “E-type” Eriksons daughter Isadora Elisabeth Esmeralda was born in early 2023. In mid-October 2024, the couple shared a picture of their now one-year-old daughter on a respirator.
“This is our daughter Izadora. Here on a respirator.”, Jacobs wrote on his Instagram, and continued “Me and Martin have discussed and considered showing this picture where our daughter is in a very vulnerable situation. But the picture is telling of how bad things can go.”

The post showed that one-year-old Izadora had swallowed a battery belonging to a toy, something that could have ended really badly.
“When the battery ends up in the esophagus or down into the stomach, the intestinal tract forms an electrical current circuit. This causes it to corrode the organs and a serious burn occurs. If it burns a hole, it is life-threatening.”, she wrote at the time.

Great ignorance: “These batteries are dangerous to life”
Fortunately, Izadora survived and after two weeks in hospital the family was able to return home. But the incident has been etched in the memory of Erikson and Jacobs.
– It was terrible because she was constantly pointing at her mouth, so that’s what I will have anxiety about for the rest of my life, apart from the whole incident, says “E-type” Eriksson in “Nyhetsmorgon”.

The pair are now keen to spread the word about how easy it is for young children to ingest a battery and how devastating the consequences can be. For that reason, the couple has participated in TV4’s “News morning”.
– We have noticed since we chose to go out with this picture that the ignorance is actually very great. You don’t actually know that these batteries are life-threatening, says Melina Jacobs on the TV sofa.

Thought the daughter was sick – the food “bounced” out
In the television studio, Izadora runs around while her mother Jacobs tells how the couple discovered that something was not right with their daughter.
– Two and a half, almost three weeks ago, all the children were sitting at home on the sofa watching TV, and all of a sudden she (Izadora, editor’s note) became really sad. It was impossible to comfort her. After a while she started pointing at the neck and we looked in the neck and shined a flashlight but saw nothing. Then the evening passed, she was still worried and sad. At night, she developed a fever, quite a high fever, and I gave Panodil thinking that she is getting sick, that she has a sore throat, says Melinda Jacobs, and continues:

– In the morning she will have breakfast but cannot swallow, but the food comes back. At early lunch when the same thing happens again I get really worried. We went straight to the emergency room. It wasn’t that she threw it up, it just bounced back out, and then we began to suspect that she had something in her throat, or a serious throat infection, we had no idea if she had swallowed anything.

E-type: “They’re just everywhere!”
Izadora’s father “E-type” is clearly cut by the incident. He says that his thoughts went to, among other things, urinary tract infection, sore throats and more.
— If you have a very serious throat infection that hurts a lot, the child usually doesn’t eat because it hurts too much to swallow. Then the drool flowed in a way that it doesn’t usually do in children. They can drool if they eat, this was more than that, he says in the television studio.

It was only when the couple arrived at the emergency room with their one-year-old that they learned she had swallowed a battery.
– I felt that was the least likely of all options. All batteries are locked in a cabinet where the key is one and a half meters up in the air so that only adult children can reach it. That’s when you start to understand that these batteries are only in toys and in certain things, then now when you see… They are greeting cards, thermometers, alarm keys, boat keys. They are just everywhere!

The warning: Those batteries are most dangerous for small children
In the post on Instagram, Melinda Jacobs describes the battery as Izadora as “you know the little rounds that are in a lot of toys, watches, airtags, keys, greeting cards, fever thermometers, etc…”. In the feature in “Nyhetsmorgon”, Martin Erikson talks about which batteries are more dangerous than others for small children.

– The surgeon said that if the battery is a centimeter and a half, then it passes down into the stomach and it does some damage, but certainly not as much damage as if it were stuck and burning in one place. It is the batteries that are two centimeters that are the really dangerous ones because they get stuck in the throat, says Erikson i TV4.
