meeting between Andrzej Duda and Donald Tusk on the formation

Since Tuesday October 24, representatives of the various Polish parties have been marching in the office of President Andrzej Duda. Ten days after the elections, it is a question of finding an agreement on the political color of the next government. For now, the identity of Poland’s next prime minister remains a mystery.

The three liberal opposition parties have presented their candidate for the post of Prime Minister, they are united to support Donald Tusk. The former Prime Minister from 2007 to 2014 and leader of the Civic Coalition therefore seems ideally suited to form the next government.

On Tuesday, the leader of the Polish opposition called on the head of state to entrust him with “ quickly » the mission to form the new government: “ Polish people expect quick decisions. We are ready […] to work at any time “, said Donald Tusk.

But for this, he must convince the president that he is legitimate to assume this function, because it is he, Andrzej Duda, who will entrust the responsibility of forming a government to the future Prime Minister, recalls our correspondent in Warsaw, Adrien Sarlat. And he had warned, he will appoint a representative from the winning party in the legislative elections.

Towards a possible continuation of PiS at the head of the country?

The opposition parties may have won more than half of the seats together, but they campaigned separately. In fact, it was the populist nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party which won the election. But the PiS will only have 194 seats out of 460, with no prospect of a majority coalition. The Civic Coalition led by Donald Tusk and its potential allies, the Third Way and the New Left, together obtained 248 seats in Parliament, an absolute majority.

Tuesday, the negotiations took place under the sign of appeasement according to the president, who continues to maintain the mystery over a possible retention of PiS at the head of the country. Donald Tusk was able to formally reiterate his desire to take back the reins of Poland.

According to some analysts, initially, Andrzej Duda, from and close to the PiS, will task a representative of this party with forming a government, even if this mission seems doomed to failure. If the PiS’s inability to find a majority is confirmed, it is Parliament which will appoint a Prime Minister, and in this case, it will most likely be Donald Tusk, who has already exercised this function in the past.

The name of the new Prime Minister should be known by the end of the week.
