In our best-of-breed Medieval 2: Total War iOS review content, we take a closer look at the mobile version of the game.
We started to see the productions that we played with great pleasure at the time and which were shown among the best of their kind, on mobile platforms as well. Previously, we witnessed the transition of games such as XCOM 2 and Rome: Total War to mobile platforms with the signature of Feral Interactive. As a matter of fact, in our XCOM 2 iOS review content, I told you how well the game is adapted to mobile platforms. Here, the company managed to come up with another classic game this time. Medieval 2: Total War iOS review In our article, we take a closer look at the iPad version of the game and ask ‘Can Total War be played on mobile platform?’ We are looking for the answer to the question.
What has changed in Medieval 2: Total War iOS version?
First of all, the game has come to both iOS and Android platforms at the same time, instead of a sequential release as in other productions. Therefore, no matter what system you use, I can say that you will get a similar experience on mobile.
On the other hand, Medieval 2: Total War has been successfully adapted to mobile platforms. With the advantage of touch control, you get the pleasure you used to play the game, and with the advantage of being portable, you can continue to expand your territory at every opportunity you find. I think replaying such old classics on mobile creates a nice feeling of nostalgia and shows us how the game’s theme is actually suitable for these platforms.
Medieval 2: A production that has a turn-based battle system as well as the bureaucracy of Total War. The mobile version of the game currently includes all the features of the PC version, except for online matches. In other words, you both hit the bottom of the bureaucracy and tactics in the map system, and you try to occupy the enemy’s territory with the most critical decisions to be taken in the war system. With the kingdoms and empires that you can unlock in the game, it is possible to make very different progressions.
If you consider the strategic structure it contains and the aim of spreading to three continents, I can say that these different countries offer you hundreds of hours of gameplay if you like the genre. Because in the general dynamics of the game, you may encounter scenarios that operate very differently, even with the slightest different decision you will make. On the other hand, I can already say that the general structure of the game will be expanded with the downloadable content of Kingdom, which will come later on the PC version.
Before the main scenarios in the game, just like in the PC version, the training part is also included. I would definitely recommend you to play this part especially for troop control, learning the touch part and strategies in war dynamics. Even if you are a very good Total War player, it is useful to remember certain dynamics again for the transition to the mobile version.
Medieval 2: Total War offers a turn-based gameplay in the main map, where you will move more on the side of bureaucracy, but where you have to get your hands dirty from time to time. The decisions you make, the progress of your family tree with your collaborations, and the crusades offer you the opportunity to play a wide history, and more importantly, to shape it according to your decisions. The fact that the game has different dynamics, let alone every round, even in every play, has increased its replayability.
For example, when I first started testing the game, in the England scenario, I first aimed to move north towards Scotland. Of course, for this, I had to capture York in the first place. I sent a spy inside, and my spy, lurking in the bushes, was able to successfully complete his mission and provide me with information on how many soldiers were inside. As you can see in the video, when I tried to advance the same scenario faster, I encountered a completely different process. This time, my spy trying to enter the city of York behind a commercial vehicle could not get rid of a spear in the chest. Luckily, I didn’t have much trouble capturing it when I rushed 700 soldiers to the York border. Of course, the fact that I acted so impulsively and quickly would not have pleased the surrounding countries and rebel groups, as the threats in my region also increased.
horse, horse, catapult
The development of your Medieval 2: Total War cities, which started in the 1080s, not only progresses historically, but also leads to different scenarios in the war part, with the diplomas and agreements you will make with other countries. In the first place, while you are leaning against the enemy gates with arrows, bows and spears, in the following rounds of the game, you will discover different types of gameplay including night raids, catapults and catapults, and long occupations. When espionage, ambassadors, exchanging girls and religious events are included, of course, medieval history is laid out in front of you with a completely different scenario.
The game is also very easy to control with its touch feature. We see that all indicators such as diploma options, map usage and of course troop control are transferred to the game in different ways according to mobile platforms. All of them are beautifully played. From time to time, you may have trouble with the array and camera control in the war part, it is difficult to control the battles closely, especially in the residential areas, but after you get used to it, you can play it fluently in these parts. In short, I can say that I generally like both the screen layout (HUD) and the touch-play part. Unit control on the phone is more difficult, but when using the ipad version, I encountered a much faster and more comfortable gameplay.
In conclusion, I don’t need to explain an important classic again and again. Medieval 2: Total War is already one of the best examples of this genre and as I said, it has been transferred to the mobile platform very well with the advantage of being portable. As in the PC version, not being able to install a Turkish patch may bother you a bit. Although you may have some difficulties in control on small screens, it is a real pleasure to play such games wherever you want with the advantage of the touch screen. If you like playing games on mobile platforms and the strategy genre, I can say that you should not miss this game, especially if the Total War series is a series you love.
