On July 1, 2016, the National Assembly adopted an amendment to the “Equality and Citizenship” bill which provides by 2020 to introduce 40% of products from local food, including 20% of food from the ‘organic farming or in conversion in the menus of school or company canteens.
By January 1, 2020, completed the unbalanced meal trays in the canteen!
Collective restaurants (school or company) must include in their menus 40% of products mentioning the quality and origin, coming from short circuits, or meeting sustainable development criteria (particularly seasonality). And 20% offoods from organic farming or in conversion.
Organic and local: some French canteens are making efforts
Progress has already been made in some communities: according to a results of Agence Bio published in May 2016, nearly six out of 10 collective restaurants serve Organic Products, against 46% in 2011 and 4% before 2006. However, most canteens offer one or two organic products, but rarely menus.
75% of schools say they offer organic, 62% of companies, 26% of establishments in the health / social sector.
For those who offer this feeding type, purchases are estimated at 225 million euros, an increase of 18% compared to 2014. The share of organic in the total amount of purchases was around 14% in 2015 while it was only 5 % in 2008.
