Swedish Armand Duplantis and Norway Karsten Warholm are athletics superstars, but soon the two will measure their superiority in a surprising competition. Duplantis and Warholm, ME men in their respective sports, will meet in a duel in the 100-meter sprint.
The long-awaited sprint competition recently got its official confirmation. The spectacle will take place in Zurich on the eve of the Diamond League games on September 4.
Duplantis, 24, who overwhelmingly won the pole vault Olympic gold, wowed the Paris Olympic audience by scoring a world record 625 at the end of the pole vault final.
Warholm won the Olympic silver in the 400-meter hurdles in Paris, when the USA Ray Benjamin managed to knock down the Norwegian. 28-year-old Warholm ran a phenomenal ME time of 45.94 at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
A loss to the pole vaulter would be “embarrassing”
The idea of the future 100-meter fight started a year ago in the summer, when the men discussed the matter on social media. The conversation aroused great interest and made the duo realize their idea.
Duplantis believes he has every chance of defeating Warholm.
– I don’t know which one is better, but I trust myself. I think I have a good chance, Duplantis said for Swedish SVT.
– I’m supercharged. I’ve rarely looked forward to a competition this much, “Mondo” was already excited before for Aftonbladet.
Warholm admits that losing to a pole vaulter in a running competition would be a bit embarrassing.
– Yes, a little. But I’m excited about what he (Duplantis) can do, Warholm commented to NRK.
How hard of a ride can you expect in Zurich?
– To be honest, I don’t expect either of us to run any super time. But I myself will be disappointed if I don’t manage to run under 10.40, Warholm predicts.
Based on the comparison of the records, a very even distribution can be expected. Warholm has run 10.49 in 100 and Duplantis has cleared his best time in 10.57.
