A month ago, the day after the Cyclone Chido disaster, calls for donations were launched to help the Mahorais. Collections of equipment and food were organized by numerous associations. Nearly 700 prize pools have been created on the Leetchi platform.
Faced with the emergency, the surge of solidarity for Mayotte was immediate. Thus, from the day after the natural disasterhundreds of prize pools have emerged on an online platform well known to the French, Leetchi. “ For Mayotte, there are approximately 700 pots that have been created, which have made it possible to collect approximately between 700 000 and 800 000 euros. In total, we were able to count 17 000 people who, out of these 700 pots, mobilized to help the populations and provide them with financial support », Lists the general director of the platform, Jérôme Daguet.
Johan Reboul, says “ The Young Committed » on social networks, is an influencer. He launched a fundraiser to help Sarah Minas, a middle school teacher in Mayotte. One month later, it exceeds 40,000 euros. “ I didn’t know her directly, but right after what happened in Mayotte, I had a great feeling of helplessness, he confides. I did an internship at United Nationswhere my former manager told me about this teacher in Mayotte who, while looking for her students in the slums, noticed that there is no assistance, that there is no help to be given to this population who has just suffered a cyclone. This is why I launched this fundraiser. This could help Sarah find her students and provide help directly to the population.. »
Thousands of kilometers away, thanks to these donations, Sarah Minas organizes teams of volunteers in the field. “ Distributions are made every two days depending on the neighborhood. At the end of each distribution, I centralize the expenses that have been made. Johan, who holds the kitty, then tells me how much money remains in the kitty. With what’s left, I plan the next distribution days », Explains the young teacher. During collection, the platform carries out checks. “ For our part, at Leetchi, we are extremely vigilant on these subjects of destination of funds and verification of identities », confirms Jérôme Daguet.
It is thanks to the community of more than 140,000 people following Johan Reboul on the social networks that the prize pool was successful. But, for the influencer, it is above all an important responsibility: “ The prize pool also worked because there was trust from the community. We had to demonstrate concretely how we were going to use this money. At the beginning, I had to advance my own funds since, in fact, the platform blocked the transfer of funds to ensure that the money was well spent. They asked me for proof, they asked me to account. There were all the logistics to be done to really demonstrate that things were going well directly on site.. »
Today, this emergency fund is closed. The generosity of donors has made it possible to help deprived families, even if, for Sarah, there is still much to do for her students and their parents.
