After Van Benthem worked for years at the Tax and Customs Administration and at two ministries, he was part of Queen Beatrix’s official secretariat for four years. It took some getting used to in 2005 no longer as a civil servant, but as mayor of Eemnes. “I’m still only human, but others suddenly saw ‘the mayor’ come in. That’s me 24 hours a day, whether I’m on a work visit or in the supermarket. Sometimes someone shouts ‘Hey, burg!’ But almost nowhere in Eemnes am I Roland.”
