Mayor Dijksma large police deployment prevents disorder at Paardenveld demonstrations

Mayor Dijksma explains that demonstrations and counter-demonstrations are always held close to each other, even though this may result in a confrontation. “As regularly discussed in your council, the right to demonstrate is a great asset in Utrecht, regardless of the content of the demonstration. Demonstrations can be unpleasant and it is known that demonstrations can provoke counter reactions, sometimes violent. We give the right to demonstrate ample scope. We actively facilitate and, where necessary, protect demonstrations. This also means that there is always room for a counter-narrative. The aim is that a (counter)demonstration can take place in the vicinity of a demonstration. In this way, the fundamental right to demonstrate everyone is secured as much as possible. This means that the triangle is very reluctant to impose restrictions on demonstrations.”
