On the evening of a election day which took place peacefully, the ballot boxes are under close surveillance this Sunday evening in Mauritius. In 21 counting centers, special police forces watch over the ballots, in the presence of representatives of the electoral coalitions. Vigilance will be stronger this time due to the risks of electoral fraud which emerged in this intense six-week campaign.
The counting must begin this Monday at 9 a.m. in the 21 centers spread across the island. The 770,000 ballots will reveal their first secrets mid-morning. The final trends should emerge around noon, before the official results are announced in the afternoon.
One million Mauritian voters were called upon to nominate 62 of the 70 deputies of the island’s Assembly – the other eight will be appointed. The vote comes following the dissolution of Parliament decided by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth at the beginning of October. This election pitted two visions for Mauritius against each other: the People’s Alliance of the outgoing head of government versus the Alliance of Change led by another former Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam. A duel which captivated voters, also concerned about purchasing power, the fight against drugs and the independence of institutions.
