His District 9 received four Oscar nominations 14 years ago. As of this week you can see Neill Blomkamp’s new film Gran Turismo in cinemas – the former Sci-Fi Genius has retrained for racer action. Even its District 9 successor, Elysium, struggled with the high expectations and partly fulfilled them among the fans. Blomkamp himself was not satisfied with the blockbuster.
On TV today: What is Elysium about?
Elysium is set in the year 2154. The world has become one big garbage dump. The gap between rich and poor is huge. While 99 percent of the population dwells in the ruins of the past, the 1 percent of the privileged have the idyllic space station Elysiumorbiting the once-blue planet at a safe distance.
Only there is a life worth living possible for people and entry is required accordingly. Matt Damon joins the immigration battle as ex-con Max. His opponents: the ruthless Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster) and the mercenary Kruger (Sharlto Copley).
Expensive sci-fi blockbuster: Neill Blomkamp found him “just not good enough”
In 2015, Blomkamp looked back on his Elysium experience in an interview. “The film I made just wasn’t good enough”, he said. High expectations don’t bother him. What bothers him is the feeling of a film “screwed up” to have. And he felt that way about Elysium
This is what Blomkamp says about Elysium:
After all, the film probably narrowly missed a flop: with one Budget of $115 million Elysium raked in $268 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The film was rated 6.6 on Moviepilot. Compared to District 9 (7.1) a drop of 0.5 points.
When is Elysium on TV?
RTL2 shows Elysium on Friday at 8:15 p.m. The repetition follows on Saturday night at 3.15 a.m. It’s worth switching on, because the sci-fi film is currently not included in the flat rate of a streaming service.
