Matilda Nilsson says she is aiming for the Police University of Applied Sciences. He does not rule out playing abroad in the future.
Striker Matilda Nilsson27, moves from Frölunda to Ilves, who play in the main league of Finnish women’s ice hockey. He says he will sign the player contract this week.
Nilsson decided in August that he will not return to Sweden for the next season. In addition to Sweden, the player was contacted from Switzerland.
– I made the decision that right now I want to go to school here in Finland first, and besides that, of course I want to play in Finland at the major league level, Nilsson says.
– I have applied to Tampere Police University and I would like to go there. My long-term dream would be to go to school in Finland and then be able to go out into the world again, if I feel like it.
Moving to Ilves was also influenced by the fact that Nilsson’s partner was able to study to become a police officer and will start his studies in October.
Nilsson’s heart still beats for hockey, and according to him, the transfer does not mean the end of investing in a sports career. He has trained hard over the summer, for example Leevi Selänten with.
Championship for Tampere?
Nilsson moved to Sweden’s top tier SDHL for the 2022–2023 season. He played his first season in the western neighbor Brynäs with 16+12=28 in the regular season and the previous season in Frölunda (7+9=16).
Nilsson believes that the domestic series has developed in a more professional direction over the past couple of years.
– At least the name of the series has changed while I’ve been away, and I believe that many other things have certainly moved forward in the teams, and we’ve been able to establish a competitive athlete identity for individuals and clubs, that we’re taking girls’ and women’s hockey forward.
Ilves last won the women’s SM gold in 2010 and was silver in 2019. Nilsson expects to be able to help the team with her own strengths and hopes that the series will be tough and even.
– I hope for good success and, of course, a championship for Tampere.
The women’s ice hockey main series, now known as the Aurora League, starts on September 6.
