Mateo Retegui puts Italy on track in Malta

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Mateo Retegui, the Italian-Argentinian striker called to the rescue by Roberto Mancini, out of goalscorers, put Italy on the path to a first success, without shining, in qualifying for Euro 2024 on Sunday in Malta ( 2-0). Already a scorer against England (2-1 defeat) on Thursday for his debut with the Azzurri, the Argentinian with an Italian passport thanks to a grandfather from Sicily quickly opened the scoring with a header from a corner (15th). Retegui was, along with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Giovanni De Lorenzo, one of only three starters confirmed by Mancini from the side lined up at kick-off – and battered for 45 minutes – against England. With his authoritative whim, the center-forward of Club Atlético Tigre had the merit of putting an end to the slight wavering at the start of the Italian game.
