The Taliban government has killed the IS leader behind the suicide attack at Kabul airport during the chaotic withdrawal of US forces in 2021, the White House said.

About 170 Afghans and 13 American soldiers were killed by the bomb that detonated in the crowds at the airport entrance. Desperate people had gathered at the airport to try to flee the country as Kabul fell to the Taliban.

The IS terrorist movement took responsibility for the deed.

According to White House national security spokesman John Kirby, the IS leader was directly involved in planning attacks like the one at the airport entrance.

“Now he can no longer plan or carry out attacks,” Kirby said in a statement.

“He was killed in a Taliban operation,” adds Kirby without giving any further details.

IS has increased its attacks since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021.
