Superior Lord of the Rings battle was incredibly elaborate
The climax of the three-hour The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is the 40-minute Battle of Helm’s Deep. Here Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli & Co. defend the eponymous fortress against a huge army of Uruk-hai.
This massive battle took 120 days to film, that’s a whopping four months! A total of 20 hours of material was filmed for this, from which the 40-minute passage was then cut.
Since the scenes of the battle 75 percent shot at night were made, the sequence required a great deal of effort. This was also due to the fact that the extreme rain of the scenes had to be poured onto the people involved in the form of gigantic masses of water.
Added to this was the renunciation of unnecessary CGI use, resulting in a Most of the characters played by real extras became. Combined with the epic action and emotional weight of the sequence, the Battle of Helm’s Deep is quite possibly the culmination of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
