Master director shares video 10 years after failure

It hurt fans of fantasy and horror terribly when Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness failed almost 10 years ago. The legendary director has now, however, in the form of test material shared the only scenes of the film, that we may ever see.

It shows a man being surprised by a tentacle monster in a cave. It is not known exactly what kind of creature it is supposed to be. The material served as a presentation for the effects company Industrial Light & Magic, which wanted to demonstrate the CGI look of the monster.

Guillermo del Toro and HP Lovecraft were for many the dream team of a fantastic fantasy adaptation. Del Toro has been celebrated for his genre sensibilities and character design since Pan’s Labyrinth, Lovecraft is considered one of the most influential horror writers of all time.

According to Slashfilm, the project was supposed to cost around 150 million dollars at the time, be cast with Tom Cruise and still get an 18+ clearance. Studios understandably balked at such ambitions. More than ten years later, thanks to successes like Deadpool, however, a different wind could be blowing.
