New Tom Hanks film Here with Robert Wright: A century in just one room

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Richard McGuire, the story of Here unfolds over an entire century. The action takes place in a single room which is inhabited by various couples over time. While the parents of Tom Hanks’ character initially dominate the room, baby boomer Richard and his high school girlfriend and later wife Margaret (Wright) are at the center of the story.

The living room is in the same camera setting shown ‒ a long shot, as can be seen in the trailer and in the first images published exclusively by Vanity Fair. The temporal changes are shown by the Set design and equipment of the space, as well as through aging of the figures and costumes adapted to the time.

As Zemeckis explained to Vanity Fair, the idea behind Here is unique:

The perspective never changes, but everything around it does. This has never been done before. There are similar scenes in very early silent films, before the language of montage was invented. But apart from that, it was a very risky undertaking.Aging and de-aging: This is how drastically Tom Hanks and Robin Wright change in Here

Hanks plays Richard in Here, from his early teens to his 80s, using the most modern techniques of Aging and de-aging to make the 67-year-old actor look believable according to his age in the film.

Zemeckis, who has already worked with digital effects on films such as The Polar Express, The Legend of Beowolf and Pinocchio, faced a new, extensive challenge with his stars:

It only works because the performances are so good. Both Tom and Robin immediately understood: ‘Okay, we have to go back and recall, as we were 50 or 40 years agoand we need to bring back that energy, that attitude, and even raise our voices. All that sort of thing.

In addition to Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, Here will also feature Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly and Paul Bettany (WandaVision) as Richard’s parents, Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery and Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rapsody) as a couple experiencing the turn of the century, and David Flynn (Proximity) and Ophelia Lovibond (Minx) as a couple in the 1920s.

When will Here be in cinemas?

In the US, Here will be 15 November 2024 in cinemas. A German cinema release is not yet known.
