Massive sci fi action with giant monsters that brings to life

From today you can watch a spectacular monster adventure on Netflix. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) delights as the stupid climax of the so-called MonsterVerse, which was founded in 2014 with Godzilla.

While there was still an interest in family conflicts and the king of the titans was used sparingly, Godzilla vs. Kong is in its best moments, as if a six-year-old child had been given control of a 200 million budget. This is expressed in part in the absurd theory that underlies the story.

This is how Godzilla vs. Kong picks up on the theory

Godzilla vs. Kong is set five years after the events of Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters. At that time Godzilla had saved the people, this time he is going crazy and only monkey King Kong can face him. But there is much more behind the behavior of the atomic lizard than initially assumed.

For the first time in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong brings the two real protagonists together in one film. The big innovation of the series is found below the surface of the earth. King of the Monsters prepared it, Godzilla vs. Kong takes us deep. Because in the course of the action a ancient underground cave system uncovered. In the MonsterVerse, this ecosystem represents the origin of the titans, i.e. the gigantic creatures in the title. An ancestor of Kong even sat on a huge throne here.

Kong in the hollow earth

The screenplay, by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, adapts a real-life theory that was popularized among scientists in the 18th century and even led to attempts to lead expeditions underground (which in turn inspired Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth).

Later became the Hollow Earth theory hijacked by conspiracy theorists. Depending on who you believe, the subterranean world was the origin of UFOs or a refuge for the inhabitants of Atlantis. Underlying much of this speculation is the fear that the people above the ground are being controlled by an alien power below. Jordan Peele also takes up this motif in his 2019 horror film Us. Scientific knowledge, for example from the study of seismic waves, has disproved these theories.

How the MonsterVerse continues after Godzilla vs. Kong

In 2024 comes the next feature film in the Monsterverse, again directed by Adam Wingard: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Furthermore, the animated series Skull Island has been streaming on Netflix since June and the live-action series Godzilla and the Titans is also in the works.
