Massive demonstration against violence in Belgrade

The demonstration on Friday followed two separate incidents in which 18 people were shot dead by two separate assailants earlier in May.

The demonstration was the third held under the slogan “Serbia against violence”, which also calls for the resignation of ministers and officials responsible for the interior.

There are also proposals to ban violence on national television and in, for example, computer games.

– We are in shock, in disbelief and we are angry, said Jelena Mihajlovic in front of the congregation.

— And the question echoes within all of us: what kind of society are we handing over to our children.

Demonstrations have also taken place in the Parliament of Serbia. On Friday, pro-European parliamentarians walked out of a plenary in protest that the ruling party was “trying to silence demonstrations instead of discussing the issue of increased violence.

“Instead, we unite with the citizens in their protests,” said opposition politician Zoran Lutovac, deputy speaker and chairman of the Democratic Party.
