Maserati “Gran Turismo” celebrates its 75th anniversary. First exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show in 1947, the legend of Gran Turismo began with the Maserati A6 1500, the pioneer of an unprecedented class of automobiles that made its mark on automobile history with its revolutionary spirit. The highly acclaimed model marked the first step of Maserati’s new era of renewing its technology and design. Dating back to 1941, the design of the A6 1500 was inspired by 6CMs and was finalized with Gran Turismo thinking. In the project name of the car, A was used to describe ‘Alfieri’ and 6 was used to indicate the number of cylinders, and it was named “A6”. Having a fixed cylinder head and a double camshaft engine, the car’s engine producing 65 HP with a single Weber 36DCR carburetor reached a maximum speed of 150 km/h. The first model with mechanical action folding headlights, designed for the Geneva Motor Show, was produced at the Pininfarina body shop in February 1947.

The car stood out in Geneva not only with its folding headlights or advanced chassis, but also with its plexiglass sunroof and engine hood that can be opened from both sides or completely removed. The accolades and awards that came to the A6 1500 prompted the decision to quickly go into mass production. In 1948 the product received a cosmetic update and Pininfarina made changes to the bodywork, with embossed trim decals on the front fenders; added two rear seats to the cabin.
Production of the A6 1500 Gran Turismo continued until 1950. Produced 58 units in 4 years, the A6 1500 was a milestone in Maserati history. In this way, the brand began to establish itself as a manufacturer of tailor-made, high-quality road cars with a sporty DNA. The sleek bodywork designed by Pininfarina continued to inspire subsequent generations of Maserati cars.
