Imagine you are at the train station waiting for the train and suddenly a woman commits suicide. Traumatizing enough, right? But then you come closer and realize: The dead looks exactly like you! One of the best sci-fi series ever starts with this scenario (rated 7.8 on Moviepilot): Orphan Black.

For a long time, the Canadian series, in which the main actress Tatiana Maslany plays over a dozen different roles, has not been streamed anywhere. All 5 seasons of the acclaimed sci-fi thriller are now available on Amazon’s ad-supported streaming service Freevee*. And that’s especially worthwhile for fans of great female figures and dark secrets.

That’s what sci-fi hotspot Orphan Black is all about

Sarah Manning (Maslany) wants to leave. About her violent ex-partner (Michael Mando, last fantastic in Better Call Saul), but also about the life she seems to have screwed up so dramatically. The orphan, who grew up with her “brother” Felix (Jordan Gavaris) with a foster mother, is not even allowed to have her daughter with her! When a woman who looks incredibly similar to her commits suicide in front of her eyes, Sarah seizes the chance for a new life – and from then on poses as police officer Beth Childs.

Instead of the perfect new life, Sarah expects completely new problems: While researching the background of the dead, she finds out that there are more women who look exactly like her. Women like the brilliant student Cosima and the only superficially perfect suburban mom Alison. They all appear to be clones that created as part of a gene experiment became. But why? And who is the mysterious person whose job it seems to be to kill all the “results” of this experiment? It seems as if Sarah suddenly can’t trust anyone anymore.

Orphan Black is released from 16 years, ran from 2013 to 2017 and has a total of 5 seasons with 10 episodes each. There is good news for everyone who is thirsting for a sequel to the sci-fi series: With Orphan Black: Echoes, the story about a mysterious clone project gets a spin-off after 6 years.

Marvel star Tatiana Maslany shines in 17 different roles

Orphan Black strikes the perfect balance of mystery thriller, deep sci-fi vision, family drama – and it’s damn funny too. This is mainly due to Tatiana Maslany, who creates the impossible: 17 clones to play, all of which feel like completely separate characters. Even when they are interacting in scenes and there is no one in the picture but Maslany. The actress has rightly received several awards for it, including the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series.

Over the years, an enthusiastic fan community, the “Clone Club”, developed around the series. For female and queer viewers in particular, Orphan Black felt like a revelation. With Sarah or the tragic villain Rachel (also Maslany), the sci-fi series not only showed complex female characters. One of the central love stories told with Cosima and the genetic researcher Delphine (Evelyne Brochu). complicated lesbian relationship beyond all feel-good clichés.

That’s another reason why Orphan Black feels incredibly topical 6 years after the end of the main series – and is still a real series gem.
