There are people who think Moon Knight is the best Marvel series yet. Others were rather disappointed with the Disney+ series adaptation of the comic book hero. There’s one thing nobody can deny, though: listen to Oscar Isaac’s acting the most impressive thing that has ever happened in the MCU.
It is all the more surprising that the 43-year-old had doubts about the project before filming began. And the double, oh what, triple role in Moon Knight considered the biggest risk of his career.
From Star Wars to Dune: Oscar Isaac was one of the most sought-after actors even before Moon Knight
In fact, Oscar Isaac has managed to do what not many can: strike the perfect balance between huge blockbusters and demanding, smaller productions. As Poe Dameron won the hearts of even increasingly frustrated Star Wars fans. With his role as Leto Atreides in Dune, he co-starred in one of the most anticipated films of recent years.
At the same time, Isaac proved in the HBO series Scenes From a Marriage and the Paul Schrader film The Card Counter that, at his core, he is one thing: a supreme character actor. So actually the perfect choice for Moon Knight, a tragic antihero, who not only struggles with classic Marvel villains, but also with his own psyche. Even so, Oscar Isaac was worried that the series could derail his career.
The Marvel star was afraid of appearing “awkward” in the MCU series
The Hollywood Reporter invited several Hollywood stars to an interview to talk to them about difficult professional and private decisions, among other things. Also present: Samuel L. Jackson, Brian Cox, Michael Keaton, Tom Hiddleston, Quincy Isaiah – and of course Oscar Isaac. When asked which one the biggest risk of his acting career so far had been, he found a surprising answer.
That’s how it felt with Moon Knight. To ‘Oh man, I’m really going down with this’. If only because it would be so incredibly embarrassing, especially because I put on a cape for it. Do you know what I mean? Then you stand for this whole thing. Like, ‘Holy shit, I’m really doing this now.’
Isaac should no longer regret this decision. His performance not only inspired fans and critics. The series itself was also an important step for many people – after all Moon Knight was the first MCU series to feature an Egyptian superhero.
During a flight, according to Oscar Isaac, someone gave him a little note with a moon thrown on the seat. “It said: My mother would disinherit me if I didn’t tell you now how much it means to me as a person of color what you do.”says the actor in an interview. “That was very sweet.”
