Agatha All Along reveals Aubrey Plaza as Marvel villain Death
The episode title Death on my hand was already a first hint, but it wasn’t until the final minutes of the episode that the big surprise came: Rio Vidal, portrayed by Aubrey Plaza, is much more than a centuries-old Green Witch. She is the personification of death.
The witch Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone) comes to this conclusion in the course of the most recent test of the witch’s path, which also gives us an answer to her previously erratic behavior. Lilia’s consciousness jumps uncontrollably through time – and now at the time of an earlier encounter with Death, in which “Rio” explains: “In the end all roads lead to me.“
Anyone who paid close attention from the beginning could already do it numerous clues to Rio’s true identity find as a grim reaper. Here is just a small selection:
The revelation that Agatha has had a queer love affair with Death himself for centuries and that he serves as the villain of the Marvel series is of great importance not only for the remaining two episodes of Agatha All Along, but also for the MCU as a whole. Because Death should have been seen six years ago.
Marvel villain Lady Death was previously written out of the Avengers films
Death himself plays a big role in the Marvel comics and is there as a character Death or Lady Death known. The figure plays an important role, especially in the Infinity Gauntlet series. In it, Thanos wants to conquer the heart of his cosmic lover and therefore destroys half the universe with the Infinity Stones.
Before Avengers 3: Infinity War hit theaters in 2018, many comic fans were hoping for an appearance from the skeletal beauty. But ultimately the character was cut from the film. Co-author Stephen McFeeley explained the reason for this in an interview with Vulture as follows:
That would also be another level, another plane of existencecreate that the MCU may not have achieved yet. Do we even have metaphysical characters yet?
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, however, commented in more detail about Lady Death being deleted from the story and how the theme of her relationship with Thanos was still incorporated into the Avengers films:
We talked about his motivation, and a lot of the motivation surrounding Lady Death has to do with balance. It’s about the balance between life and death, about the belief that life is out of control and that there must be a correction. We wanted to make this the driving force of Thanos and his backstory. Have there [die Autoren und Regisseure] a more natural, grounded path found…well, as grounded as a giant Mad Titan can be.
However, a lot has happened in the MCU since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga and cosmic entities are no longer uncommon. The existence of the devil was recently officially confirmed. As Agatha All Along explores the dark, supernatural and magical fantasy corner of the MCU, the first appearance of Marvel Death is now timely.
