We still have to wait almost exactly a year until the Fantastic Four return to the big screen in a new guise. While Marvel revealed the faces behind the new superhero team months ago, the comic book studio has now followed up at the Comic Con in San Diego with a first video that is not yet available to the public. It revealed unexpected Plot details for the Fantastic Four reboot, as well as the new title of the action spectacle.
Fantastic Four: First Steps comes with a retro look
According to Variety, the video shown was shown in the more common 4:3 format for television, so that it looked like it was being played on an old television. The video is said to feature Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal) asking bored students in a classroom if they want to see an explosion. The silhouette of Ben Grimm aka Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) was also seen on an old dating show.
The video will feature the two as well as their team colleagues Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) and Johnny Storm aka Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) in astronaut suits on which the respective surnames of our heroes are printed. Together they are supposed to board a rocket that looks somewhere between retro and futuristic. The last picture apparently shows villain Galactus, whose face can be seen behind a building.

Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman explained to the audience that the film was strongly influenced by the aesthetics and worldview of the 1960s:
We make a retro-futuristic 60s film. [Der Designer] Syd Mead was our inspiration. The 60s represent optimism for me. I love the Fantastic Four. I love their different powers. We want to honor the comics, but also be close to real life.”No origin story”: Fantastic Four reboot sets story later
Shakman explained to Entertainment Weekly that the film is not an origin story of the well-known heroes, but rather the story begins after the characters have changed:
We decided early in the process that we didn’t want to show an origin story. We’re making it our own by not telling the story of how they go into space and are changed there and have the story start there. How that happens is a familiar narrative. We’re telling a new story by at the end of the first act begin.
In addition to the new faces of the four eponymous heroes, Ralph Ineson (The First Omen) as Galactus, Julia Garner (Inventing Anna) as Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell), Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black) and John Malkovich (Being John Malcovich) will be in front of the camera in as yet unknown roles for the Marvel blockbuster.
