Marvel opportunity missed after 14 years for absolutely no reason: Spider-Man star wanted to return in No Way Home, but wasn’t asked

Marvel opportunity missed after 14 years for absolutely no reason

Marvel has invited people to the big class reunion in 2021, but Kirsten Dunst is still waiting for the call. The Mary Jane actress now explained this with regard to the big cinema reunion in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Marvel actress Kirsten Dunst would have liked to star in Spider-Man: No Way Home

Speaking to GQ, the actress was asked if she had been asked to return to the cinema in No Way Home. No. I would have done it“, she replies. She likes the idea of filming with her old co-star Tobey Maguire again:

It would be funny, just Tobey [Maguire] and to take me and do the whole thing in a strange indie way, like a different kind of superhero movie.

Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire in the first Spider-Man cinematic trilogy

Dunst’s idea is based on a fitting observation: the Spider-Man films starring Maguire and Dunst, most recently 2007’s Spider-Man 3, have a noticeably stronger indie sensibility than the later blockbuster titans of the MCU era. Bringing back the Mary Jane of this era after 14 years would have offered an interesting contrast. Why wasn’t Dunst asked?

There is obviously no official statement from Marvel. There doesn’t seem to be any old animosity between the two big stars, at least on Dunst’s part. It was probably simply a question of the right amount: bringing back the former Spideys Maguire and Andrew Garfield in No Way Home was a sensation, But in the end, Tom Holland wasn’t allowed to completely take the spotlight away. A romantic treatment of the characters, for example through an appearance by Mary Jane, would probably have gone beyond the scope.
