Marvel makers reveal absurd sequel plans with tens of versions

The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Hulk have a difficult relationship with one another. After The Incredible Hulk failed to live up to expectations, the green Marvel hero was recast as Mark Ruffalo and his first solo adventure was hushed up for many years. That changed with the Disney+ series She-Hulk.

We are now in the middle of the Hulk renaissance. In the coming year, the MCU will bring back several characters and performers from the unloved first Hulk film. 15 years ago there were even plans for a real one The Incredible Hulk sequel that would have shown us multiple Hulk variants.

Hulks in green, gray and red! Those were the plans for The Incredible Hulk 2

Speaking to Comicbook.com, director Louis Leterrier revealed that there were concrete ideas for a The Incredible Hulk 2 before the Marvel film’s flop dashed them. The sequel would have presented us with several versions of the Hulk at the same time:

There was the Gray Hulk, there were Red Hulks – there were a lot of great things we had planned.

The Red Hulk

The Gray Hulk is another of Bruce Banner’s Hulk personalities from the comics, who can even speak fluently. The Red Hulk character, on the other hand, was a whole new comic book character at the time of The Incredible Hulk’s release. The original is General Thaddeus Ross’ Hulk alter ego, created as part of the Super Soldier program. And soon the red rager could even have his first appearance in the MCU.

Captain America 4 will be an unofficial Hulk sequel

Another Hulk solo film is still nowhere in sight, 15 years after The Incredible Hulk. But an upcoming project will be the same next year three characters from the forgotten MCU film retrieve: Captain America 4: Brave New World.

New Captain America Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is getting his own movie in 2024, in which he will meet some familiar Hulk characters. The return of Liv Tyler as Betty Ross and a renewed appearance of Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns aka Leader have already been confirmed. There’s also a reunion with Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who was portrayed in five MCU films by the late William Hurt and is now played by Harrison Ford.

While Bruce Banner himself may not appear in Captain America 4, fans can still look forward to a Hulk appearance. Rumor has it that Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross, who now holds the office of US President, mutate into the Red Hulk. With that, we get at least one element of the discarded The Incredible Hulk 2 plans to still be seen in the MCU.
