Or at least not hanging out in online circles that devote their free time to making fun of Jared Leto’s Marvel disaster, Morbius. the Meme movement around Dr. Michael Morbius has been picking up speed for weeks – and has now achieved a surprising victory.
Critics tear Morbius apart, unleashing an ironic wave of fans on the internet
Let’s face it, if you’ve clicked on this article, you probably already know what this is about: Method acting legend Jared Leto plays a genius scientist who tries to to cure his life-threatening illness with the help of bats, transformed into a vampire-like creature. The film received mostly negative reviews, enraged Marvel fans with its post-credit scenes, and seemed dismissed as a flop that Sony and the rest of the world would like to forget.

But then came the memes. Precisely because so few people saw Morbius in cinemas, the internet outdid each other in coming up with increasingly absurd plotlines. From scenes of Jared Leto allegedly “It’s Morbin Time!” or “Get morbed!” calls, up to utopian box office figures – the ironic fan enthusiasm flooded social media. As the film was streamed (illegally) by multiple channels via Twitch, thousands watched and fervently debated their alleged new favorite film. The spectacular flop had suddenly become a trash favourite, with some even clamoring for a sequel.

If the ironic fan statements were aimed at breathe new life into the Marvel flop, then they succeeded. At least partially. Because not only does Morbius seem to be discussed longer and more passionately than the seemingly overpowering (and better) MCU competitor Doctor Strange 2. The film could even get a second chance at the box office.

As reported by Comic Book, among others, Morbius is scheduled to be shown again in over 1,000 US theaters starting June 3, 2022. However, it is questionable whether thousands of memes can be converted into thousands of cinema tickets.
