Warning, there are spoilers for the MCU until Avengers: Endgame! There’s one cringeworthy moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that even the most hardcore Marvel fans had to borrow a tissue for: the death of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in Avengers 4: Endgame. His departure is probably the saddest moment in 15 years of the MCU.
But neither the fans nor those responsible for the film seem to be able to let the star and his role go. Rumors keep cropping up about Downey Jr. returning to the MCU. Marvel boss Kevin Feige speaks now final word of power.
“We promised him it would be the last time”: Iron Man remains dead in the MCU
Kevin Feige also has his say in an extensive portrait of Robert Downey Jr. in Vanity Fair. Robert Downey Jr. was the founder of the first Iron Man in 2008 and was an important pillar of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time. His farewell should be honored:
We honor this moment and we will never go back there. We have all worked very hard to get there for many years and would never want to magically undo it.
The question of how seriously Marvel takes character deaths is justified. After all, Loki has already died and then got his own series as an alternative version of himself. Gamora also returned in a different form in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Scarlett Johansson was seen in the prequel Black Widow after her MCU death.

Tony Stark’s final moments in the MCU
With Robert Downey Jr., however, it sounds different. Feige emphasizes that he is the actor doesn’t want to go through the farewell torture again:
We already said a tearful goodbye on the last day of filming. We all had to process it first. We promised him it would be the last time – forever.
Whether this also excludes cameos once the emotional wounds have all healed remains an open question. After all, in the MCU we are in the middle of a colorful multiverse, where an alternative Tony Stark could pop his head through the door at any time in the next Avengers.
