Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine this summer. But of all people, the Marvel boss was actually against it – and there are good reasons for that.
One of the most iconic and beloved superhero actors in film history, Hugh Jackman has captured the hearts of many fans with his role as Wolverine. From his first appearance in 2000’s X-Men to his final adventure in 2017’s Logan.
Now, after 8 years, he returns to his legendary role as Wolverine, this time in the third part of Deadpool, Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool 3 is a special film for Disney because it marks the first R-rated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). R-Rated means that people under 17 are not allowed to see the film without an adult accompanying them. In the USA the age restrictions are slightly different than here.
But while fans are looking forward to his return as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine – not everyone was keen on the idea. Of all people, the head behind Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, had something against it.
Wolverine got a great ending with Logan
What does he object to? The idea of Jackman making another appearance as Wolverine in a Deadpool film was met with Feige’s skepticism. Although Deadpool & Wolverine would be part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the first film in the franchise, Feige discouraged Jackman from returning.
Here’s what he said:
Let me give you some advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. This is not something we should undo.

He reminded Jackman that his departure in Logan was a perfect final note for the character that shouldn’t be diluted by another return. After nearly 20 years and multiple films, Logan was a moving finale to Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine, satisfying both actors and fans and making it one of the most popular superhero films of all time. On IMDb, Logan scores more than well with 8.1 stars out of 832,204 reviews.
Jackman himself also had concerns and probably thought a lot about a possible return. After a long drive to clear his head, he finally decided to do it. And I got out of the car and called Ryan and said, ‘Ryan, if you want me, I’m in.
Because the possibility of creating a new version of Wolverine through the multiverse in the Marvel world made the return attractive. Now we can go back because it’s science. So I don’t have to mess with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably for the fans too, he reveals to SiriusXM.
A new approach through multiverse
In an interview with Empire, Jackman emphasizes that Deadpool & Wolverine will “show different sides of Wolverine that we’ve never seen in the films before.” It’s great for Deadpool to have someone to punch him in the face.
Using the multiverse as a plot device allows the film’s creators to take a new approach to ensuring Jackman’s return doesn’t tarnish the legacy of his signature farewell in Logan.
By emphasizing that this is not the same Logan, they give Jackman a chance to play his character in a fresh way.
You don’t have to wait much longer to see how the whole thing was implemented: Deadpool & Wolverine opens in cinemas on July 24th.
