Who will win the Oscar 2023? Today we are one step closer to answering that question. Because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced which films and stars can hope for the important film award this year.

Martial arts action and German Netflix film under favorites

This year’s main prize for the best film of the year is being contested by the multiversal action-adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once, the German Netflix film Nothing New in the West and Tom Cruise’s action-adventure Top Gun: Maverick.

The blockbuster Avatar 2 has hopes of winning the prize, as can the lavish drama Tár and Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical film The Fabelmans.

Marvel gets acting nomination for the first time

In the acting categories, the Academy Awards had a few more surprises in store. With Angela Bassett’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Black Panther 2, Marvel received an acting nomination for the first time. For leading actors, Ana de Armas snagged a nomination for the controversial Monroe film Blond, while Paul Mescal jostled among the nominees for the acclaimed drama Aftersun.

In advance, proclaimed favorites like Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Cate Blanchett (Tár) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) also have hopes for an award.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12, 2023 held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Late night talker Jimmy Kimmel will host the awards for the third time.
