In recent years, a debate has repeatedly broken out about whether superhero blockbusters à la Marvel really count as serious cinema. Master director Martin Scorsese in particular sparked repeated discussions with his statements.
A new interview has now been published with Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, who was asked about this topic. The actor only has harsh words for co-stars who look down on their work.
Chris Hemsworth can’t stand negative Marvel statements from co-stars
In an interview with the British Times, he was asked what he would think of critical Marvel comments from filmmakers like Scorsese or The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola. In this context, Hemsworth particularly targeted co-stars from his franchise:
It felt hard. And it bothers me […]. It makes me roll my eyes at how people disparage the superhero field. These guys also had films that didn’t work – we all do. When they were talking about what was going on with Superhero, I thought, ‘Cool, tell that to the billions that watch. Were they all wrong?’
In the Times interview, Hemsworth expands on this and says that the behavior of moviegoers has changed so much not because of superhero films, but because of smartphones and social media. For him, these would have been blockbusters instead ensured that more people are drawn to cinemas and now come back again.
Is Thor 5 coming with Chris Hemsworth in the MCU?
In October 2023, development of a fifth Thor film starring Hemsworth was announced without Thor 3 and 4 director Taika Waititi. Since this report, there has been no new information about the status of Thor 5.
Chris Hemsworth will soon be seen in cinemas outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He plays him in the new Mad Max film Furiosa weird villain Dementus. The blockbuster from Fury Road director George Miller starts on May 23, 2024 in the cinemas.
