In connection with the sports screen’s 60th anniversary, a tradition that had been forgotten for years was revived, when the Martti Jukola medal was awarded to six sports actors who had made a significant day’s work at Urheilu.
The distribution of the Martti Jukola medals began in 2000, when it was 100 years since the legendary radio sports commentator, Ph.D. Martti Jukola from birth. The medal was designed by a professor at the time Kimmo Kaivanto.
At the sports screen celebration in 2023, they received the medal Hilla Blomberg, Hannu-Pekka “Hoopi” Hänninen, I met Parm, Maria Rosenström, Arto Teronen and Bro-Erik “Bubi” Wallenius. The medal was awarded to them by Yleisradio’s CEO Merja-Ylä-Anttila Over the head of sports Joose Palonen from the show.
The first time they received the Martti Jukola medal Paavo Noponen, Victory Raatikainen and Kalevi Uusivuori. After them, they had time to receive the medal before the celebration on Friday Juha Alanen, Matti Parviainen, Kari Manty, Antero Green Field, Seppo Kannas, Anssi Kukkonen, Pentti Salmi and passed away in July of the current year Juha Jokinen.
The Martti Jukola medal can be awarded to a person or association who has excelled in journalism or sports. The decision to award the medal is always made by the CEO based on the proposal of the company’s sports manager.

Hilla Blomberg is one of the first women as a sports commentator on both radio and television. He started working at Yleisradio in 1979 and has been involved in many ways in his programs (e.g. Aamusydämelli, Vierivite kivet, Akuutti, Aamu-TV) and in his output about healthy life, exercise and well-being.
Hannu-Pekka “Hoopi” Hänninen is one of the current veterans of TV sports reporting and the mediator of many top moments (e.g. Kimmo Kinnunen, Sari Essayah, Aki Parviainen, Arto Bryggare, Matti Nykänen, Hannu Manninen). He worked at from 1977-2016 and was the host of Urheiluruutu for 40 years. “Hoopi” also worked as a producer of ‘s World Cup and European Championship football and Champions League broadcasts for many years.
Tapani Parm is a respected director of international sports TV broadcasts who has been awarded, among other things, the Pro Finlandia medal. He has worked at since 1980 and as a director since 1990. Parmi’s special skills are evidenced by his acting as the main director of numerous international broadcasts of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympics, as well as athletics and skiing of the Winter Olympics. Tapani Parm has been the main director of the President of the Republic’s Independence Day reception numerous times, and e.g. As a Eurovision producer.
Maria Rosenström worked at Yleisradio since 1987. He was the coordinator of Urheilu’s international affairs, an invisible and modest driller, and a perfect example of an expert whose professionalism made it possible for others to succeed. Maria Rosenström’s success was underpinned by e.g. his exceptionally good networks with foreign colleagues.
Arto Teronen is one of the three heads of Radiourheilti because there will be no new ones after the merger. The other two are Pekka Tiilikainen and Voitto Raatikainen. Teronen is a long-time sports journalist and non-fiction writer who, before Yleisradio, worked at Ilta-Sanom and Suomen Urheilulehti. He is one of the co-developers of Olympiaradio Heikki Peltonen and Heikki Vuohelainen with and the editor of the popular Amateur guides and Kiveen hakatut series, among others.
Bror-Erik “Bubi” Wallenius has worked at Yleisradio since the 1970s until these days. He has extensively explained various sports and named the bird after which the Finnish men’s national football team was named. Bubi is a reflective verbalist “också på svenska”. He has done numerous unforgettable interviews, one example of which is Seppo Rädyn geography in Stuttgart in 1993.
