In the 1980s, Martin Scorsese made one of his most controversial films, a masterpiece that adapted a novel about the fictionalized life of Jesus Christ. The Last Temptation of Christ earned the Goodfellas director criticism and even death threats for his deviations from church doctrine. More than 35 years later, Scorsese will once again turn to the founder of Christianity. After Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese will film A Life of Jesus and in a new interview he revealed details.

Scorsese is currently deep into the Oscar campaign for Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio. As part of this, he answered questions from the LA Times in an interview. This provides the following information about his next film:

  • He was inspired by a call from and brief meeting with Pope Francis.
  • The story is based on one Novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo from 1973. Scorsese has already adapted another novel by the writer, Silence (2016).
  • According to the English translation, Shusako Endo wrote the book not as a biography or fictionalized story, but as a story for non-Christian Japanese that was intended to explain what Jesus stands for.
  • Scorsese has this script written together with film critic and festival programmer Kent Jones (Hitchcock/Truffaut).
  • According to the interview it is a film adaptation “mostly in the Present created”.
  • The film should be round 80 minutes long, which would make it Scorsese’s shortest feature film. His debut Who is knocking on my door? currently tops the list with 90 minutes.
  • The Spin is scheduled to take place later this year.

    There is still no start date for A Life of Jesus. The production background – i.e. studios or financing companies – is also not known.
