Killers of the Flower Moon will be released this year, bringing together the Hollywood aristocracy: Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro are playing together under the direction of Martin Scorsese. The director got a huge running time of 206 minutes from his producers. But Scorsese put a lot of thought into what story he would tell in the three-plus hours – so he rewrote the finished script. What is Killers of the Flower Moon about?
Killers of the Flower Moon is set in 1920s Oklahoma. The Osage live there, a tribe of Native Americans who have achieved enormous wealth through oil. Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone) is one of them. She leads a well-ordered life with her white husband Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), nephew of the influential William Hale (Robert De Niro). But more and more of Mollie’s relatives die under mysterious circumstances. A suspicion arises: Is it a white conspiracy?, who want to gain access to the wealth of the Osage through the murders? Could Mollie be the next victim?
Martin Scorsese had to completely rewrite his finished story
The film’s subject matter is extremely sensitive and Martin Scorsese handled the story with corresponding care. This care led to an important insight:
At a certain point I realized that I was making a film about all the white people.”, Scorsese told Time Magazine. He had neglected the perspective of the people whose story he actually wanted to tell: that of the Native Americans. He be “Approached from the outside in, and that worried me.”
Together with his co-writer Eric Roth, Scorsese revised the script and changed the perspective. Mollie and Ernest Burkart’s relationship became the new focus of the film. Without this change, the investigating FBI would have been the center of the plot – and the natives would have been merely supporting characters.
