Markus Näslund left hockey completely after the NHL years – this is what the icon’s life looks like today: “Don’t miss it”

He played 16 successful seasons in the NHL.
Today, Markus Näslund stays away from the hockey world.
– I feel satisfied with that, he tells Sportbibeln.

Markus Näslund, 50, appeared in the parent club Järveds IF. Then it was on to Modo, where after a season in the junior team, he played his first season in the Elitserien in 1990/1991. Two years later, it was off to the Pittsburgh Penguins and the NHL, where he remained for 16 years. In addition to the Penguins, there were also games in the Vancouver Canucks and a season in the New York Rangers.

Näslund’s new life

After the hockey career there were 3.5 years as General Manager in Modo. Today, Näslund still lives in Örnsköldsvik, where he also grew up.

However, he has no role left in hockey, but is focused on something completely different.
– It has turned out that I worked with real estate. After all, I worked for three and a half years with Modo, with hockey, when I moved home, as the sporting manager there. But since 2014, I have been involved in property development and invest in a few other things as well. But above all in the real estate industry, and I have run a project at home in Örnsköldsvik, and together with colleagues I have a couple of ongoing projects in Åre, says Näslund to Sportbibeln.

Do you miss hockey?
– Not to play, I feel satisfied with that. But I think it’s great fun to watch. Especially now that Modo is back in the SHL, it feels like the interest in hockey for many, including me, has grown again. I think it’s a great fun sport, entertaining and fun to watch, but I don’t miss playing or working at it.

Following Modo

There will be no leadership role in the future for you then?
– No, right now it feels very foreign. I know what commitment is required, and I thought it was fun to try it out, but I felt that.. I want to do something else now and in the future.

Interest in a leadership role is low, but interest in hockey – and in particular Modo – is still there.

How much do you follow hockey and what do you watch then?
– I usually try to go in and check every morning how things have been going in the NHL, and it’s clear that you mainly follow Vancouver a little extra, because that’s where I was the longest. Otherwise, it’s mainly Modo that I follow, and I’ve done that since I was a little boy.
– Even when I lived in North America, I had the twins Since great insight into how things went for Modo. You tried to follow them as much as you could. Now it wasn’t possible to watch matches back then, but it was like you could follow it over the internet a little bit, says Näslund.
