With film roles in blockbusters like Transformers 4 and 5 and Planet of the Apes (2001), Mark Wahlberg has already left his mark on the sci-fi genre. As the actor explained in a 2013 Total Film interview, according to CBS News, it was then that he got his hands on the script for Abrams’ Star Trek. But he couldn’t do much with it:

I tried to read the script. I didn’t understand the words or the dialogue or anything else.

When the sci-fi reboot hit theaters in 2009 and Wahlberg saw it, he was annoyed:

Then I saw the film. I was like, ‘Holy shit, [Abrams] did a great job.’

In the film, Wahlberg was supposed to play the role of Captain Kirk’s father. He wouldn’t have had much screen time anyway. Abrams’ sci-fi reboot was a global box office success, spawning two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.

What about Star Trek 4 from the reboot universe?

Since the last part of the series, which was now almost 10 years ago, there has been another Star Trek sequel sunk in production hell. There were always plans for a fourth part with the crew around Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana), but they were then discarded.

Most recently, X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg came on board in mid-2024 to breathe new life into another film in the sci-fi series. Since then, fans have been waiting in vain for concrete information about the project.
