Van der Maarel talks extensively about his decision on RTV Utrecht in Een Berg Sport. He acknowledges that the countdown has now really begun. “I would like to say not, but yes it is now true,” Van der Maarel has thought about the decision for a long time. “We had discussions this summer and decided together to continue for another year. I then made an agreement with myself to spend six months to see how things are going. How well are I doing? How fit am I? What can I still do? I have come to the conclusion that others have already decided that this is happening,” Van der Maarel laughs with some self-mockery.
