Charlotte Baris: Thousands of red and green banners wave in the gray sky of Paris. And a slogan comes back: “Liberty, equality, paternity”. This October 6, 2019, tens of thousands of people are marching against the opening of medically assisted procreation to all women. The PMA is a flagship measure of the bioethics law, and a campaign promise from Emmanuel Macron.

In the procession, many came with family. The coaches chartered for the occasion pour out demonstrators from all over France. And some National Rally executives also responded to the call, such as MEPs Gilbert Collard and Nicolas Bay. But Marine Le Pen preferred to abstain.

For the Le Pen daughter, it is – I quote – “an almost intimate debate, where everyone must feel free.” The RN will therefore not set any voting instructions. A strategy to avoid offending part of its electorate, while not leaving the field open to the right. Marine Le Pen seeks a happy medium, as in the era of the yellow vests: support without calling for demonstrations, oppose without slipping. The famous “at the same time” borrowed from macronie. But this lack of clarity could frustrate some of his supporters…
