In Laerma on Rhodes, 30,000–40,000 hectares of the forest have burned. Marina Korkida, who has lived on the island for over 25 years, describes the area and the surrounding forest as the heart of Rhodes. She usually takes tourists there herself for her tours.
– They have tried to extinguish it now for six days, but it is still smoldering from the earth. It might need to go on for several weeks, she says.
