“Very uncertain”, those are the first words that come to Van Beukering’s mind when she thinks back to the hours after the collapse of the six ramps of the parking garage in Nieuwegein. In such cases, the mayor is responsible for public order and safety, so it was quite exciting, says Van Beukering. “Especially the first hours: we didn’t know whether there would be any casualties. I was very afraid of that. So there was a lot of relief when the signal came that there would probably be no casualties.”
