For four years she lived next door to the mass murderer Rickard Andersson, 35.
Maria Jabal Khail encountered him in the elevator, in the laundry room and in the stairwell.
– He was very social and talked nothing. He answered nothing, she says.
Last Tuesday, police stormed the apartment house that Maria Jabal Khail lives in. She received lots of messages from loved ones.
Then she realized that her neighbor-35-year-old Rickard Andersson-was behind the school massacre at Risbergska in Örebro.
– I was completely shocked and completely traumatized. I felt “how could it be this person, who has been with me, who has done this mass shooting at school against all innocents,” she says.
She was filled with worry and fear.
– I’ve met him a few times. Imagine if something made him annoyed, and so he had done something to us.
Got angry in the laundry room
They lived in the same stairwell for four years. At one point, he seemed to be reluctant to carry the stroller from the stairs. Other times he left the elevator and took the stairs when Mary and her family arrived.
Twice he got mad at her because she pulled over time in the laundry room.
– Then I took out the laundry and apologized for being five minutes late. No answer. I walked out of the laundry room and he threw the door again.
The last time she saw him was about two weeks ago.
– The last times I saw him, I thought he was annoyed or angry with something. I have not seen such behavior from him before.
She has never seen him visit. He never made any sounds away. He avoided eye contact. And even though Mary met him repeatedly, she never heard him talk.
– He was very social and talked nothing. He answered nothing, she says.
Fear: “gets nightmares”
The police have described Rickard Andersson’s existence as isolated. He moved into his apartment in 2016 and had little contact with other people for several years. His activity in the digital world is not yet clear.
For Maria, this past week has been characterized by difficult feelings. She has difficulty sleeping and takes the elevator instead of the stairs to avoid passing Rickard Andersson’s apartment.
Now she has even begun to investigate the possibility of moving.
– I get nightmares, I feel bad about having such a neighbor. I will never open my door to any of the neighbors no matter how nice they are.
