Margins are shrinking in Swedish households – so many cannot cope with an unforeseen expense

In total, this applies to nearly 1.7 million people, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB). Households consisting of a single adult with children stand out the most. Among them, almost half lack such a cash margin.

“In that group, for example, it is more common than among the general population to have difficulty making ends meet. It is more common for them to fall behind on payments, not be able to afford to spend smaller sums on themselves, or to afford to go on a week’s vacation,” says the investigator Helena Månsson in a press release from Statistics Sweden.

In Sweden, it is estimated that 14 percent of all single parents with children live in material and social poverty, which can be compared with the average in the EU, which is 26 percent of households consisting of a single parent with children.
