Figures show that a third of the 24,000 residential fires that occur each year start in the kitchen, with most occurring in the winter months of December and January. It can be lit candles that are forgotten or crackling bonfires, but the most common cause of fire is forgetting the stove.
– Don’t leave anything on the stove because you could accidentally start it or forget the plate, says Esbjörn Eriksson, team leader at the Jämtland rescue service.
Our reporter Marcus Noterius is on site in an exercise area in Östersund together with the emergency services. Under Esbjörn Eriksson’s supervision, he demonstrates how not to put out fires – to show how bad things can get if the fire is handled in the wrong way.
– This is not something you should test yourself, but we test this under safe conditions, says Marcus Noterius, who is wearing proper protective equipment before the test.
