Charlotte Baris: May 14, 2018. An audience of Israeli and American officials gathered in Jerusalem. Dressed in their best outfits, they sit in front of an entirely navy blue stage, decorated with a few red flowers. Behind, the flags of the United States and the Jewish State intertwine on a giant screen.
Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, accompanied by his wife Ivanka Trump, pulls on a long string. A large blue cloth falls under applause. He has just unveiled a plaque reading: “United States Embassy”. Just below, the president’s name is written. And Donald Trump is speaking by videoconference.
On this day, the United States Embassy in Israel was officially moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. It was a campaign promise from Donald Trump, and one of the most notable decisions of his first term. The former president’s foreign policy then revolved a lot around support for Israel. He notably pushed for the signing of the Abraham Accords. A text which normalized relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
And to handle international politics during his second term, Trump chose a former rival. The new Secretary of State is an experienced American politician… His name is Marco Rubio.
