Marc Staal hung up his cleats after 17 NHL seasons

NHL defenseman Marc Staal’s playing career came to an end at the age of 37.

A defenseman who played in the NHL hockey league for 17 years By Marc Staal his playing career was decided on Thursday, said the New York Rangers on their account in the messaging service X.

The Canadian Staal, 37, will not leave the sport or the league, however, as the Rangers have hired him to assist the club’s player development.

Staal was drafted by the Rangers in the opening round of the 2005 NHL Draft with pick number 12. He played for the Rangers for 13 seasons until being traded to the Detroit Red Wings in 2020. After two seasons with the Wings, Staal was still seen with the Florida Panthers in the 2022-23 season and last season with the Philadelphia Flyers.

In total, Staal played 1,136 NHL regular season games and collected 53+181=234. In the playoffs, he played 128 matches with 7+13=20.

Marc’s older brother Eric Staal39, announced at the end of July that he was ending his NHL career. Younger brother Jordan Staal35, still plays and is the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes.
