Most of Ukraine’s neighboring countries are members of the EU and NATO and thus formally agree on the issue of the war. But there are differences – which could mean it for Ukraine in the long run.
Hungary is the country within the EU that has taken the most stand for Russia in the war, partly because of how the country considers Ukraine to be treating the Hungarian minority in the country.
– They are expected to be able to pose a resistance in the upcoming evaluation of Ukraine’s candidate status for the EU this autumn, and this could make it more difficult for Ukraine to further integrate into the EU, says Jacob Hedenskog.
Pro-Russian opinion
According to Jacob Hedenskog, Poland is the EU country that has supported Ukraine the most, including by donating and importing weapons to Ukraine. But both in Slovakia and in Moldova, pro-Russian parties seem to be gaining more and more support.
– It would be very serious if Moldova got a pro-Russian government because they border both Ukraine and the EU, says Jacob Hedenskog.
