Map: Here are the countries where Russia recruits soldiers

Russia has conducted several targeted campaigns to recruit citizens from other countries into its own army since the war in Ukraine began.

There are reports of recruitment attempts from Syria, Cuba, and several Central Asian countries. According to lieutenant colonel Johan Huovinen, they seem to have worked to some extent – above all when it comes to Central Asia.

– Since 2022, you have the opportunity to obtain citizenship in Russia if you serve in the Russian armed forces for a year. This is sure to attract many people in Central Asia.

In addition, you can get a salary of around SEK 30,000 a month, social guarantees, and survivor’s protection if you serve in Ukraine, according to Johan Huovinen.
