In order to measure the impact of the new bioethics law on the activity of medically assisted procreation centers, the biomedicine agency conducted the survey between July 1 and December 31, 2022. The results show that nearly 23,000 requests for initial consultations were recorded.
The PMA, or AMP (medically assisted procreation), has been open to female couples and single women since its entry into force on September 29, 2021. To measure the effects of this PMA Law for all, the biomedicine agency carried out several surveys of centers authorized for the activity of gamete donation (spermatozoa and oocytes) and self-preservation of gametes outside of a medical indication. The results were published this Wednesday, March 8, on this international day of struggle for women’s rights.
PMA for all: key figures from the biomedicine agency
According to the press release from the biomedicine agency, “about 5,800 requests for first consultations have been recorded for ART with sperm donation for the benefit of female couples or unmarried women for the second half of 2022. , a downward trend of 38% compared to the first half of 2022”. On the other hand, “about 4,200 first consultations were carried out for the benefit of couples of women or unmarried women in the second half of 2022” and “1,545 attempts at ART with sperm donation were carried out in the second half 2022 for the benefit of these new audiences”. Finally, “as of December 31, 2022, there were 444 active pregnancies (i.e. more than 12 weeks of amenorrhea) and 21 deliveries for couples of women and unmarried women, resulting from ART attempts with sperm donation carried out since August 2021. .” Concerning the conservation of oocytes: “since the entry into force of the law, nearly 11,500 women have requested a first consultation for the self-storage of their oocytes and nearly 4,800 first consultations have been carried out” and “1 778 benefited from at least one conservation in 2022.”
NO to diets, YES to WW!
AMP: 1000 times more requests than babies…
If these figures seem important, they demonstrate above all that there is a significant gap between the requests and the children born from the PMA for all. Indeed, again according to the figures listed by the biomedicine agency: “the time taken to take charge of ART with sperm donation (from making the appointment to the 1st attempt) varies greatly from one center to another, but the average time as of December 31, 2022 is stabilizing and is estimated at 14.4 months at the national level”. With regard to ART requests with oocyte donation, you have to be patient: “the processing time for ART with oocyte donation, from making the appointment to the first allocation of oocytes is on average 23 months at the national level, as of December 31, 2022.” These results can be explained by the fact that not all assisted reproduction centers are authorized to treat these people and that there are already many requests from heterosexual couples for this type of course.
