The reason why pensioners often receive back taxes is that the pension comes from several different payers. The rule is that the main payer deducts tax according to the tax table, while others deduct 30 percent tax.
“It is important above all for new pensioners to review their tax, so that the back tax is not a surprise,” says Emelie Köhn, declaration coordinator at the Swedish Tax Agency in a press release.
In total, close to SEK 24 billion must be paid in back taxes. Of these, 6.3 billion must be paid by people over the age of 65, most of whom have a pension.
For most people, the back tax must be paid by September 12 at the latest.
